The tradition

The laurel wreath for graduation can be a gift from parents or friends, without any particular distinction. It depends on who will be present at the graduation ceremony and who the graduate will celebrate with afterwards at the graduation party.
Graduation, that long-awaited milestone, can finally be celebrated and announced to everyone that it’s over!
And so the laurel wreath is needed, as a symbol and pride of the newly graduated doctor. It is one of the graduation traditions deeply rooted in Italian academic history.

The History of the Laurel Wreath

The laurel wreath in classical Greece represented Apollo, god of the sun, painting, and poetry, emblematic of wisdom and intelligence.

In Roman times, the laurel wreath, called the corona triumphalis, was instead the symbol given to a victorious general to celebrate their successes.

In the Medieval era, the wreath became a sign of greatness in the poetic realm (the most representative figure in history in this sense is Dante Alighieri, who is always depicted with a laurel wreath and a red robe) and increasingly took on a direct connection with the concept of education and knowledge.

The very meaning is also linked to the Latin etymology of the word. The wreath was called laurus insignis, and from laurus, the laurel plant, derives the Italian term.

The graduate is thus crowned with the laurel garland to represent an achievement and the status of a learned person.
